Bill Payer Program

Money Management

The Bill Payer Program is a free service that helps low-income older adults and adults with disabilities to stay in their homes and communities.

Dedicated, compassionate volunteers donate their time to be of service in the community. Together, volunteer and client partner to tackle the often daunting prospect of monthly paperwork.  Trusting relationships develop, enriching the lives of both clients and volunteers.  Clients gain the reassurance of knowing their monthly bills will be paid on time.

The Bill Payer Program currently serves clients living in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, wherever volunteers are available.

Visits take place once or twice a month, usually in the client's home. Bill Payers help clients with:

  • Organizing bills
  • Writing checks for the client's signature
  • Balancing the checkbook
  • Reconciling the bank statement

Bill Payers may also assist clients to access cash, budget, lower monthly bills and pay down debt.

Central to the Bill Payer Program's effectiveness is "third-party monitoring" provided by a corps of volunteer Monitors.  Monitors audit bank statements monthly to guard against error or fraud.  All volunteers are supported by program staff and protected by AARP Foundation's signature safeguards.

The Bill Payer Program is part of AARP Foundation, AARP's affiliated charity
