Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature Reach Budget Agreement
Governor Agrees to Restore Title XX funding for Senior Centers
Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature have reached an agreement on the 2011-12 Executive Budget. The agreement includes a full restoration of Title XX funding for senior centers. The agreement was met with a sigh of relief from older New Yorkers who will see their senior center come off the chopping block.
Igal Jellinek, Executive Director, CSCS, stated, “Our elected leaders in Albany have reached an agreement on New York’s 2011-12 budget which includes a full restoration of Title XX funding, keeping 105 senior centers open for operation. The agreement could not have been reached without the tireless efforts of our state assemblymembers, state senators, and City Council members. CSCS would like to commend all of our elected leaders for fiercely working towards saving senior centers for 10,000 older New Yorkers.”
A ground swell of advocacy efforts moved this issue forward. Older New Yorkers, and other concerned citizens lead the efforts by organizing dozens of rallies, making thousands of phone calls, and writing thousands of emails/letters to Governor Cuomo and the state legislature.
The Council of Senior Centers and Services (CSCS) promotes the quality of life, independent living, productivity, and dignity of mature older adults principally in New York City. CSCS champions elder rights. For more information visit the CSCS web site at cscs-ny.org.
