City Council Members Blast Proposed Senior Center Closures

Lawmakers and seniors rallied at City Hall Friday to urge Albany to restore proposed cuts that would close 105 senior centers.

City Council members said the closures could be life-threatening for thousands of seniors who rely on the facilities for meals, medical check ups and educational programs.

Some City Council members suggested Albany extend the tax surcharge on wealthy New Yorkers to keep the centers open.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor Andrew Cuomo, however, want to let the tax expire.

Some protesting seniors told NY1 the centers provide much-needed support.

"We need that center. It's the only place that we have to go," said one senior citizen.

"We're home all day. This place we can go and socialize with all our friends, handicapped, blind or otherwise," said another.

"We get there, we have our meals, we congregate, we reminisce. And this is what they want to take away from us? Shame on any politician that would take that away from us," said a third.

Meanwhile, Queens residents held Friday a reopening ceremony for the Woodhaven-Richmond Hill Senior Center, which is among those on the chopping block despite $25,000 in taxpayer-funded renovations.

Organizers urged residents to pressure lawmakers to keep their center open.
