SAMPLE LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Letters should not be long – about 150 words maximum. It is better if the letter comes from a senior, but it's ok for staff or a board member to send letters as well. Letters can be mailed or emailed to the newspaper. Most local papers go to deadline on Wednesdays, so send letters before then. Please keep CSCS informed if any letters get printed. We'll put them on our website. If a letter gets printed, make sure your Councilmember sees a copy.

Senior center cuts
Date

To the editor,
As a member of the ____________ Senior Center, I am upset about all the cuts to senior services that Mayor Bloomberg wants. My senior center has already been cut and doesn't have enough money for programs. It is hard for the center to keep up with the cost of food and the mayor wants to cut meal funds. We need the van to go to the doctor or other places and the mayor wants to cut transportation. Save our senior centers and don't let the mayor cut us again.

Sincerely,
Your Name

Case management cuts
Date

To the editor,
As a senior citizen (older adult) who lives in (name of neighborhood), I am very concerned about Mayor Bloomberg trying to cut millions of dollars from services for elderly people who can't get out of the house. Cutting social workers who visit the elderly, in their 80's and 90's, at home, will make them unsafe. Just because these seniors are invisible, doesn't mean they don't count. Protect these seniors and don't cut case management.

Sincerely,
Your Name

Elder Abuse cuts
Date

To the editor,
I live in (neighborhood) and am very upset that Mayor Bloomberg wants to cut money that helps elder abuse victims. These seniors have already suffered enough. Their families take their money and sometimes yell and hit them. It is heartless to cut elder abuse funds.

Sincerely,

General cuts letter
Date

To the editor,
I live in (neighborhood) and am very upset that Mayor Bloomberg wants to cut almost $40 million from services for seniors. Seniors can hardly catch their breath. After stopping the state from closing 105 senior centers, the Mayor wants to cut millions from senior centers. He also wants to cut millions of dollars that pay for social workers to go in to the homes of elderly people who can't get out. It worries me that the Mayor also wants to do away with all money to help victims of elder abuse. These cuts will hurt elderly people. We've taken enough cuts in the last few years. Enough is enough.

Sincerely,
Your Name
Borough, NY
